Writing is an uncertain career, but one thing we can all count on is income tax. This workshop covers a broad range of tax questions geared specifically toward self-employed and freelance writers. We’ll start with distinguishing business income from hobby income, and then move on to considerations for choosing a tax treatment. Should you file as a sole proprietor? An S-corporation? We’ll look at adjustments and deductions and how to plan and properly report your expenses. The session will include handouts, tips and tools, and a discussion on the impact of the 2018 tax law changes. Mindy Mejia worked in accounting for sixteen years before leaving the corporate world to write thrillers full time. She’s the author of THE DRAGON KEEPER and EVERYTHING YOU WANT ME TO BE, and her third novel, LEAVE NO TRACE, is due out in 2018. Mindy has a BS in accounting, an MFA in writing, and is passionate about helping writers take control of tax planning decisions like the businesswomen we are.
