Stories Behind the Menu— The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen with Chef Sean Sherman

    Sandifer and Burton will be partnering with local chefs to create a cultural voyage of African American, Central American, Israeli, and Indigenous delicious food and rich storytelling. The events will be held quarterly in person at ModernWell and will be focused on a book or docu-series related to the particular ethnicity and culture.The last of the series, Stories Behind the Menu— The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen, will be held December 8th from 6:30pm - 9pm. The event features the 2022 James Beard award-winning Chef Sean Sherman, author of The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen. This evening is sponsored in part by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine.Sean Sherman is an Oglala Lakota Sioux chef, cookbook author, and promoter of indigenous cuisine. His main culinary focus has been on the revitalization and awareness of indigenous foods systems in a modern culinary context. In 2014, he opened the business titled The Sioux Chef as a caterer and food educator to the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. To open opportunities for more people to learn about Native cuisine and develop food enterprises in their tribal communities, he founded the nonprofit North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS). His restaurant, Owamni by The Sioux Chef, co-owned with Dana Thompson, is a finalist for the 2022 James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant.
