The Art of the Essay: How to Write Personal Nonfiction that Catches Readers' (And Editors') Attention with Mary Laura Philpott

    This class is ideal for both curious beginners and intermediate/advanced writers looking to swap advice or gain new ideas. (Seriously, bring a tip to share with the class, if you like!) We'll cover: - Concept generation: what to do when faced with a blank page- Finding your angle: turning a *story* into an *essay*- A few notes on publishing: keeping the submissions queue simmering without becoming obsessed (or depressed)You will eave with a list of writing prompts, suggested reading, editing tips to apply to your own writing right away, and a specific goal for what to do next in your own writing journey. **Critique Spots**   Up to six individual critique spots are also available; for an additional fee ( $30 members  $40 nonmembers) youmay submit a personal essay (2,000 words maximum) by August 16. Philpott will read and mark up those essays in advance, then meet with thosestudents in 10-minute slots during the hour after class to discuss editing ideas.
